Hope you’ll be able to stop by the store this weekend!

I’ve been writing the Jubilee Furniture blog for three years now and though always knew I needed to come up with a backup plan for when I’m on vacation – or shutter – sick – never have quite figured one out.

Rather unbelievably this is the first week where the sick part has been an issue.  Not that I haven’t been sick in the last three years – but I’ve always been able to force myself to go in and take photos.

Alas, not this week.

You’ll have to trust me when I say the store is bursting at the seams with amazing furniture.  We’re open today (Friday) from 1 to 8 and tomorrow (Saturday) from 9 to 4.

Here’s to an enjoyable, healthy, Memorial Day weekend, dear reader!

“If you judge people, you have no time to love them.” – Mother Teresa

I was emailing with a friend this week about the importance of relationships.  Having just spent a week and about 30 hours of drive time visiting various friends and family members with the sole desire to connect, value and express love – we arrived home tired but happy.

This week I spent Monday with one of my sisters, my sister-in-law and Mom as we celebrated Mother’s Day (a day late).  My husband spent some down time during a business trip in California to visit with a friend and his new wife as well as his cousin and her family.

Yesterday my mom emailed the family that her younger brother – my wild and crazy Uncle Kirk – had died the night before after many years of poor health and illness.

Relationships provide both the greatest joy and the greatest heartbreak.  The two go hand-in-hand.  For much of my twenties I decided not to allow others to get close so as to minimize the heartbreak part.  It was lonely.

So, in my thirties I made the decision to invite people in – and rarely does a day go by that I regret that choice.

I’m always trying to connect our donors and customers with those who are impacted by their decision to donate to, or shop at, Jubilee Furniture.  Though you may never meet the individuals and families who benefit from the services and programs offered through Outreach Community Ministries – you are making a difference in their lives.  Relationships – people – are important (read one such story – Guadalupe’s – here).

Today when the store opens at 1 p.m. (until 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) you’ll find tons of fabulous furniture to possibly purchase.

Making the connection between donating or purchasing a sofa to/from Jubilee Furniture and helping someone like Guadalupe attend college isn’t easy – I get that – but stepping back and looking at the bigger picture of how we’re all connected and then making the decision to invest your “stuff” (furniture/money) in that relationship is where true joy comes from.

Amen, dear reader?

Asheville, NC or bust!

Though we won’t be staying at the beautiful Biltmore Estate (photo from Google images) when we arrive in Asheville tomorrow evening, we will be there a couple of days enjoying all the city has to offer and visiting with our friend, Jim.

On our drive home we’ll stop to see our son, Jack, and his team’s 15 minute short film that’s the culmination of a semester long film class (he’s finishing his junior year at Taylor University where he’s a media communication major with an emphasis on film) and then help celebrate our nephew, Peter’s college graduation and 23rd birthday!

All that to say, I’m off this week!  Jubilee Furniture Warehouse Manager, Dan Snyder is in charge and can answer any/all questions via email ( or phone (630.337.1467).

Though I won’t be around to post my regular Friday weekly update – Dan and Chris have a ton of great pickups scheduled this week and there will be loads of “new” inventory on Friday from 1 to 8 and Saturday from 9 to 4!  I promise!

Hope you have a good week, dear reader, and I’ll see you back here on Friday, May 18th!

May the 4th be with you!

Truly the store has never looked better (thanks to massive efforts from a handful of volunteers) and we’ve never had more inventory than what’s available today (Friday)  from 1 to 8 and tomorrow (Saturday) from 9 to 4!  Impressive – if I do say so myself.

As more and more people are discovering Jubilee Furniture our only-open-two-days-a-week is especially confusing.  Several times yesterday as I was working there was a knock on the front doors and when I answered – the person would ask what our store hours are.  This is a little comical since our hours are written on the doors they were knocking on – but as this happens most Thursdays I can only guess people assume those hours are wrong because what place of business is only open two days?

The city of Carol Stream has restrictions on how many days we can be open since the store is located in a building with a church.  If we moved into a different building we could be open seven days a week – and, some day, we might make that move – but for now, we’re happy right where we are.

My boss and I have occasionally wondered if part of our appeal is because of our limited hours.  “Ooooh, you know that used furniture store in Carol Stream that’s only open two days each week?  It’s like an exclusive club – that’s open to EVERYONE – everyone that is who can get out there on Fridays and Saturdays!  How exciting!”

But ultimately I wish we had more normal hours so it wouldn’t be so hard for people to track with.  If I had a quarter for every time someone’s told me they came by the store – fill in the blank with just about any day/time (Friday at 12:00 pm. ; Thursday, Monday, Saturday at 5:00 p.m.) other than Friday from 1 to 8 or Saturday from 9 to 4 – I’d be a very rich woman who didn’t apologize so much (“I’m SO SORRY!  Yes, REALLY we’re only open two days each week.  No, we’ve never been open on Thursdays.  I’m sorry for the confusion.”).

Now that I’ve spent five paragraphs explaining our store hours (“What the heck, Susan?!”) let’s take a look at some of the new-to-us furniture available for purchase this week:

Depending on when you stop by Jubilee Furniture don’t forget to check out Wheaton Christian Center’s rummage sale – Treasures in Rummage (I’d give you their hours but they’re different from mine and we’ve had enough confusion around hours already, wouldn’t you agree?).  Read this post from a couple of weeks ago if you want more information about the sale.

And that, dear reader, concludes this week’s installment of the reality show, “Exactly How Boring Can Susan Be?”.

side note – today’s title is for my amazing, yet self-described nerdy daughter, Abby and all you Trekkies out there!
